Directions to Mission Bay Campus

ucsf's mission bay campus

A new campus: UCSF Mission Bay, located near downtown San Francisco at the corner of 16th and Owens, is the University of California, San Francisco's new 43-acre life sciences campus for teaching, research and health.

Part of UCSF: The UCSF Mission Bay campus is part of the nearly 130-year-old University of California, San Francisco. UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus (above Golden Gate Park), which is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; a graduate division for predoctoral and postdoctoral students and scientists; UCSF Medical Center; and UCSF Children's Hospital.

Part of a larger development: UCSF Mission Bay is the anchor of the entire Mission Bay project, San Francisco's largest urban development since the building of Golden Gate Park. The city's Mission Bay development covers 303 acres of land between San Francisco Bay and Interstate 280. Catellus Development Corporation is the developer of the overall Mission Bay redevelopment project.

Its purpose: The new campus will allow UCSF to double its research space, speed the pace of biomedical discovery, and help prepare a new generation of students. It may also be the centerpiece of a technology zone featuring biotechnology, applied life sciences, pharmaceuticals and other endeavors.

The land: The new campus transforms land once occupied by old warehouses and rail yards. Catellus Development Corporation donated 30 acres of the site that will comprise the UCSF Mission Bay campus. The City of San Francisco donated the additional 13 acres.

The plan: In 1999, UCSF broke ground on its new campus, which will be built in phases over the next 15 to 20 years. At full buildout, the campus will have 20 structures and contain 2.65 million gross square feet of program space.
